After the recent news of Jamie Foxx returning to the role of Electro in the upcoming third installment of the MCU Spider-Man franchise, it has now been announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will also appear in the film, reprising the role of Doctor Strange.
The two first met in Avengers: Infinity War when they faced off (alongside the late Tony Stark/Iron Man and a Bruce Banner who couldn't get his Hulk on) against the Black Order.
In fact it was Spidey who came up with the idea that saved Strange from the clutches of Thanos' right hand 'man' Ebony Maw.
"You ever see this really old movie 'Aliens'?"
Doctor Strange's inclusion does beg the question of whether Multiverse antics might come in to play since he has addressed it's existence already, and could explain Jamie Foxx's Electro (Foxx has commented he won't be blue this time around possibly suggesting an alternate universe take on the character) and J. Jonah Jameson - both coming from non-MCU Spider-man franchises. If that is the case is it really out of the realm of plausibility that we can expect to see Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen show up in live action form sooner rather than later?
As far as we know the MCU will be without Spider-man after the yet untitled (but almost certainly featuring the word home in some form) third film. Maybe this opens the door for Sony to create a live action iteration of a Spider-verse somewhere down the track.
Speaking of borrowing from past Spider-man franchises, the next entry in the Doctor Strange franchise, 'Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness' will be helmed by original Spidey trilogy director Sam Raimi. It is currently due to release in 2022 and will also feature Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch.
Spider-man 3 is expected late 2021...but Covid keeps screwing us out of MCU movies so who knows...
