HBO Max has greenlit a 10 episode Green Lantern live-action TV series based on the characters from DC Comics.
Seth Grahame-Smith (The Lego Batman Movie) will serve as showrunner for the series as well as co-writer alongside Marc Guggenheim (uh oh). The two will executive produce the show also.
The as yet unnamed show will be produced under the Berlanti Productions banner (Arrowverse) for Warner Bros and HBO Max.
Greg Berlanti has said the show "promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series".
Guggenheim and Berlanti previously co-wrote the critically derided 2011 stink-fest 'Green Lantern' starring Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong and Blake Lively.
You know...the one with the animated suit:
In all fairness though, they came a long way in redeeming themselves through fan-favourite CW show 'Arrow'. In fact, Greg Berlanti went on to become the powerhouse producer behind several superhero shows including The Flash, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and, most recently, Stargirl.
The show is set to feature Green Lantern Corps staples Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott, as well as Sinestro and Kilowog.
What? No Hal Jordan? John Stewart or Kyle Rayner? Well, okay...I don't mind so much if Kyle Rayner sits the show out. 🤐
There have been many who have worn the ring of the Green Lantern over the decades.
Starting with the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, was created by Batman co-creator Bill Finger and Martin Nodell in 1940, before a silver age relaunch in 1959 saw the most famous Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, take up the mantle and gave the character more of a sci-fi twist. Jordan was created by John Broome and Gil Kane.
Perhaps most well-known to 90's kids is John Stewart, the Green Lantern who appeared in the animated series' Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Stewart has actually been around in the comics since 1972 and was created by Denny O'Neill and Neal Adams.
Many have come since (and in-between - hello Guy Gardener!) but I risk turning this into a history of the Green Lanterns if I go on. Maybe that's a post for another day.
