Pixar's next film 'SOUL' will be forgoing a theatrical release, and will now be heading straight to the Disney+ streaming service.
The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek stated:
“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving SOUL with audiences direct to Disney+ in December. A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.”
It is set to hit Disney+ on December 25th, and unlike Mulan, will be free to subscribers.
It will still receive a theatrical release in markets where the streaming service is not available.
Directed by Pete Doctor (Inside Out, Monsters, Inc.), SOUL follows Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher, who finally gets a chance to realize his dream of performing Jazz music onstage. However, an untimely accident causes Gardner's soul to be separated from his body and begin to proceed to The Great Beyond. Not ready for that, Joe makes a break for it and inadvertently ends up in The Great Before, a realm where souls find their personalities before going to Earth. There, Gardner must work with souls in training, such as 22, a soul with no interest in Earth or the concept of life, in order to return to our world before his body dies and he loses his chance to do what he loves.
SOUL stars the voice talents of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fay, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs and Angela Bassett.
